Your Task
You are a Marine Biologist.
A school plans to choose an endangered marine species and raise
money and awareness about it and about its situation. You have
been asked to give them a talk about one endangered marine creature
to help them make their choice. You are to choose one species
to talk about as there will be talks by other Marine Biologists,
giving students a range of species to choose from.
Decide which species you wish to give a talk about. It can be a mammal, fish, reptile or invertebrate. The species must be found in Australian waters, either as a permanent resident or as a migrating visitor.
The sort of information you need
to give is:
Description of appearance
Habitat, and locations
where the species is found
Behaviours and diet
Life cycle
Threats to species
survival, and its conservation status
What action can
be or is being taken
Why the school should
adopt this species to help it survive
Resources
Go here
for a list of useful links for your research. Use a search engine
to find others. You may also use books or videos to get information.
The Process
Unless
you already have a favourite sea creature, browse first, reading
about different marine species before you select the one to research.
Once selected, go here to get a data chart on which to make notes. Print
more than one copy to use. A data chart helps you organise your
notes. Remember to list yoursources of information in a bibliography.
Presentation
Your talk to the class
should be at least 10 minutes long. A talk is always improved
when there are things to look at, such as maps, pictures or charts.
You could make a power point computer presentation, or use an
overhead projector during the talk. Be convincing, and give lots
of information. Remember, if your talk is effective, the school
may choose the species you talk about, and the funds and awareness
they raise could make a difference to that species' survival!
