Saving Water

Australia has the lowest rainfall of any continent where people live. And because we have so much sunshine water evaporates (dries up) quickly

Australians need to find lots of ways to conserve water, which means not waste it.

People should make sure taps are turned off properly so they don't drip. A dripping tap can waste litres and litres of water.

A dual-flush toilet is another water saver. A smaller amount of water can be used whenever possible, or a larger amount used only when necessary.

Other ways to save water:

A short shower uses fewer litres of water than a bath.

Turn off the tap until you are ready to rinse when you brush your teeth.

Don't clean your driveway or footpath by hosing: use a broom or rake.

Put compost or manure on your garden: it makes plants and soil healthy so they need less water.

Spread mulch about 10 cm thick on the garden beds. This keeps the soil cool and makes sure less water is needed.

A tank can be set up to collect rainwater to use on the garden.
