Sightseeing on Bali
Bali is
a tiny mountainous island. It is very beautiful, and is a popular
holiday destination. Its mountains, some of which are 2000 metres
high, are considered to be the
homes
of the gods. Beautiful rice terraces cover the sides of the mountains,
and forests and crops grow in the foothills. The arts flourish
in Bali, and can be traced back to the 14th century.
Ubud is
the centre of Balinese painting. It is located in
the mountains, so has a cooler climate. Art galleries and museums
display paintings and traditional handcrafts. Bali is famous for
its wood carvings, and here the visitor can admire artisans at
work.
There is a rich tradition of dance in Bali. The dance dramas tell stories about battles between good and evil. Many feature the Barong-Keket, a mythical half dog, half lion.
Bali Barat National Park occupies the western end of the island, and is home to a wide assortment of rare and beautiful birds. The rarest is the Bali starling, a brilliant silver white bird with blue eyes. There are very few left in the wild. There are also silvered leaf monkeys, and dolphins off the coast. There are guided walks through the parks, but no trekking is permitted in several parts of the park in an attempt to preserve the starling.
The beaches are beautiful, many
of them ideal for surfing. There are many offshore coral reefs
which offer excellent diving and snorkelling.
