Track and Field-Jumping
Events
In the high jump the athlete has to jump over a bar that rests
on two tall poles. The high jump was an event in the ancient
Olympic Games.
In the long
jump the
athletes run along a runway, to a take-off board and jump into a sandpit. The judges measures the jump from the take off board to the mark made in the sand when the athlete lands.
In
the pole
vault, athletes
use a long pole to push themselves over a bar that rests on top
of two tall poles. First the athlete runs along a runway carrying
a long pole then jams the end of the pole into a box under the
bar and pushes himself or herself up and over the bar. At the
Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, women competed in the pole vault
for the first time.

a runway, hops and lands on the same foot, takes one step onto
the other foot and then jumps as far as he or she can into a
sandpit. The judge measures the jump from the take off board to
the mark made in the sand when the athlete lands.
