There are a number of Thai islands which are favourite holiday destinations. Thai beaches are famous, with soft white sand and brilliant blue water. Diving is a popular pastime, with beautiful coral reefs to explore.
Three of the most popular islands are:
Koh Samet
This small island is about 240
km southeast of Bangkok. The island has been a national park since
1981, and offers budget holidays. The island's beaches are beautiful.
There are small coral reefs for snorkelling, there is windsurfing
or boat trips to other small islands nearby.
Koh Samui
Most of the centre of the island is covered with coconut plantations.
The two main beaches, Chaweng and Lamai, are lined with accomodation
ranging from luxury resorts to cheap backpacker hostels, and many
restaurants. On the other side of the small island is the main
town, Nathon.
At Nathon
there are restaurants and shops, a terminal for a large ferry,
which is one way to reach the island, other than a short flight
from Bangkok. The fishing industry is based in Nathon. There is a famous Big Buddha at
Koh Samui.
Phuket
This a popular island,
like Koh Samui, boasting wonderful beaches, and a range of accomodation
and holiday activities. The diving here is excellent, with clear
water and a variety of sea animals such as whale sharks, manta
rays, sharks and occasionally dolphins and orca whales .
