Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an island.
It is in the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka was once called Ceylon.
It is a tropical place which means it is hot and wet. Sometimes there are cyclones and tornadoes. The weather is cooler in the hills.
The People
About 19 million people live in Sri Lanka.
Most of the people are either Sinhalese or Tamil.
The Sinhalese people have lived there for about 2600 years. Sinhalese people speak Sinhala.
The Tamil people have been there for about 600 years. They speak Tamil.
Many Sri Lankans speak English
The capital city is Colombo.

This is the Flag
The national flower is the Blue Water Lilly.
In factories people make rubber from the latex (latex is the sap of the rubber tree)
that is collected like this from rubber trees.
Tea is picked from bushes in the hills and then dried and packed at a factory. (You can read about tea growing on kidcyber http://www.kidcyber.com.au/topics/tea.htm)
They also make clothing, cement, and textiles (cloth material).
On farms the people grow rice, sugarcane, grains, pulses (peas and beans), tea, rubber, and coconuts. They keep animals for milk, eggs, hides (leather), and meat.
Sri Lank produces most of the world's cinnamon. The spice comes from the sweetly scented, inner bark of the cinnamon tree.
Currency (Money): Sri Lanka's money is called the Rupee (Rs.) There are 100 cents (Cts.) to a rupee.

Wild animals: In Sri Lanka there are deer, wild buffalo, leopards, macaque or red monkey, snakes, sambur, and wild boar (pigs).

Sri Lankan Food
The main meals each day are rice with fish, meat and vegetables. The meals are often made as spicy curries. Sri Lankans enjoy cakes and sweets and fresh fruit too. Tea is a popular drink.

Sports
Volleyball, cricket, water sports such as sailing, surfing and swimming, as well as athletics, football, tennis and rugby are popular sports in Sri Lanka.
