Islam has one god, called Allah.
Muslims follow the teachings of the prophet Mohammed who founded the religion. (A prophet is someone who tells what God says)
The Muslim place of prayer is called a mosque (say mosk).
The holy book of Islam is called the Koran (say kor-arn). It tells Muslims how they should behave to live a good life.
Muslims are expected to pray five times a day at set times. They may do this at the mosque, at home, or in rooms especially set aside for prayer in public buildings. Before they pray, Muslims take off their shoes and leave them outside the mosque or prayer room. Then they wash their hands and face. When they pray, Muslims must face the direction of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Mecca is the holy city where the prophet Mohammed is buried.
In about 47 countries Islam is the religion of most of the people. These countries include Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Brunei, Morocco, and Turkey.
The most holy Islamic festival is Ramadan. It takes place in the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. For each day during the month of Ramadan, Muslims must not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. It is a time to visit family graves and to say extra prayers and to think about living a good life. At the end of Ramadan, there is a big festival called Eid-ul-Fitr, when people celebrate and exchange gifts.
