Official Name: Estados Unidos Méxicanos

Area: 1,958,200 square kilometres

Population: about 101 million. The people who live in Mexico are called Mexicans. They speak the official language which is Spanish. Many also speak English and there are 62 indigenous (local) languages

Capital City: Mexico City (337,000)

Government: Federal Republic. The President is the Head of State
Mexico was once governed by Spain. Mexico became an independant nation on 16 September 1810. They celebrate their independance every year with a holiday, on September 16.

Religion: most Mexicans (90%) are Roman Catholic, 6% are Protestant, and 4% other

Official Currency (money): The Mexican Peso (MXN) One Australian dollar is worth about 8 Mexican pesos.

What work do the people do?
Most people work in these industries. Food and beverages, tobacco, chemicals, iron and steel, petroleum, mining, textiles, clothing, motor vehicles, tourism. There are also jobs working for the government, and work in offices and shops, and on farms and fishing.

The most popular sport is soccer.
