The Vatican State is the smallest state in the world. It is in Rome, Italy. The Vatican is the home of the Pope, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Inside the walls of the Vatican there are gardens, streets, churches, museums and art galleries.

The Pope lives in one part of the Vatican palace.

The Vatican prints a newspaper. It has its own police force, flag, stamps, telephone system and radio and television stations.

About the Pope
The Pope is the ruler of Vatican City and is chosen by the Cardinals who are the leaders of the Catholic Church in countries around the world. The Pope is responsible for the laws of the Catholic Church and is also the Bishop of Rome. Thousand of people visit the vatican to see the Pope. On some days he is driven among the people to speak to them. At Easter and Christmas he talks to the crowd from his balcony overlooking St Peter's Square.
