Naples, built beside the Bay
of Naples, is noisy, polluted, crumbling and grubby. There are noisy street
markets and swarms of people buzz around on Vespas (Italian designed
motor scooters). But
the city has some fine castles, musuems and palaces.
Near
Naples are the magnificent ruined cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.(in the background)

Venice
Venice is built
on about 120 islands. The islands are separated by canals and
lagoons and connected by more than 400 bridges. Transport around
the city is on the waterways by motor boats called vaporetti.
Flat bottomed boats called gondolas are another way to travel in Venice.
There are three main islands in the northern part of the lagoon: Murano, Burano and Torcello.
Murano, the largest of the islands in the lagoon, is about than a kilometre away from the mainland. Since the 13th century it has been famous for its glass blowing. The famous 'Venetian glass' is blown in Murano. Another island in the lagoon is Burano, famous for its lace and brightly painted houses. One main industry of this island is fishing. The third of the main islands is Torcello, which was once an important town and the home of a bishop. There are ruins of old church buildings on the island: the Baptistery, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Fosca.
