Italy: People

There are about 58 million Italians in Italy. They speak Italian.

Houses
More than two-thirds of all italians live in cities. Most live in modern apartment blocks built near the cities. Many live in the city in older style buildings that have been divided into apartments. There are also single family homes.

I
n the country people live in villages surrounded by farm land. They live in family homes or in apartments in buildings in the villages.

 


Religion:

Most Italians are Roman Catholic. Religious festivals are an important part of Italian life.

There are also some Italians who are Protestants, some are Jews and some are Muslims.

Republic Day is the national holiday, it's on June 2. Republic Day celebrates the day in 1946 when Italians voted to have a President


Carnevale
Carnevale means 'carnival time' It is a celebration before the religious festival of Lent. People dress up in colourful costumes and wear fancy masks.


Education
All Italian children must go to school from the ages six to fourteen.


The most popular sport in Italy is soccer. A lot of people play it and a lot of people watch football on TV.
