Ice cream is a frozen dessert made from milk or cream, or soy milk, combined with sweetening and flavours. The mixture is stirred while cooling to keep it smooth and creamy.

The origins of ice cream date back to before the birth of Christ. The Roman Emperor Nero ordered ice to be brought from the mountains and mixed with fruit toppings. The ancient Persians and Greeks had similar ice treats. In the time of the Chinese Emperor, Tang, a method was developed of creating desserts from ice and milk. It is likely that these recipes were taken to Europe from China. In the French and Italian courts, these recipes for 'iced creams' and sherbets were developed further. George Washington, the first US President, had ice cream served to his guests, as did other important Americans of the time. It was the Americans who were the first to call it 'ice cream'. |
Over the years, there were developments to the ice cream churn that was used in the making of ice cream. Early models had layers of ice and salt around the container of cream to keep it cold while it was stirred. The ice cream churn now comes in electric form.
