Fencing

Fencing is a sport where people fight each other using swords. There are three different kinds of swords: the foil, the epee, and the sabre. Women fencers only use the foil.

Fencers wear protective clothing; a wire mask, a thick jacket and a glove on the hand holding the sword.

In the competition, two fencers compete at a time. Each one tries to touch the other fencer five times with their sword. There are wires in the blade of the sword so that when the sword touches a fencer, a light goes on. There are officials who keep score by counting how many times the light goes on. They also make sure that the rules are not broken.

Did you know? Fencing has been an event at all Olympic Games since 1896.
