Task 3: Call numbers
 Name:

The main hundreds numbers of the Dewey system

000 General Knowledge   500 Maths & Science
100 Psychology & Philosophy 600 Medicine & Technology
200 Religions & Mythology  700 Arts & Recreation
300 Social Sciences & Folklore    800 Literature
400 Languages & Grammar   900 Geography and History

Dewey then divided each of the 10 main areas into smaller and smaller topics. He gave each topic its own special number. For example, the 500s are divided into 510, 520, 530 and so on. Then each of the 10s is divided into 510, 511, 512 and so on.

Here's how Dewey divided the 590s.
591 zoology, 592 invertebrates, 593, 594 molluscs (animals with shells), 595 insects, 596 vertebrates, 597 reptiles and fish, 598 birds, 599 mammals

Call numbers
These Dewey numbers form part of the
call number of a book. The other part of the call number is made up of the first 3 letters of the author's last name.

A call number is the 'address' of the book or item on the library shelves.

So, the call number for a book about mammals, written by J.S. Brown would be

 599
BRO

Your task: To see what books the library has on mammals, go to the non-fiction shelves and find the books that have a 599 as part of their call number. Record the details of one of the books you find there. Set it out in this order and like this sample.
(author/s) (date published (title) (name of publisher) (place where publisher has office) ) eg.
Brown, J.S. 2003, Mammals of Asia. World Press, London.
