Dentists
Dentists help us to look after our teeth.
A dentist will show you how to brush and floss your teeth properly.
Your dentist will talk to you about eating the right foods so
that your teeth will grow and stay strong and healthy. Eating
lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and drinking milk is good.
The dentist will warn you that too much sugar is bad for your
teeth. Sugar sticks to teeth and gums and can cause problems.
When dentists examine your teeth they look to see that your teeth are healthy. A dentist looks for any decay or holes in your teeth. If a tooth has decay, the dentist will remove the decay and fill the tooth. The dentist may take a picture of the inside of your tooth. This picture is called an x ray.
If a tooth is badly decayed the dentist might pull the tooth out. The dentist can then make a new artificial tooth to take the place of the old one. The dentist will give you an anesthetic so that you won't feel any pain while teeth are taken out.
Dentists also straighten crooked teeth and repair any tooth that is cracked. The dentist can treat sore or diseased gums.

Dentists use lots of special equipment.
The x-ray machine takes pictures of your teeth. A drill gets out
the decay, and a mirror is used to see into your mouth and the
backs of the teeth. Dentists also used computers and lasers to
help them with their work.
Dentists wear masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.
People who help the dentist are dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental laboratory technicians, and receptionists.
Special dentists called orthodontists straighten teeth with braces or retainers.
Another special dentist is the periodontist who treats the gums and the bones supporting the teeth.
To become a dentist a person must study for 5 years at a university dental school.
Visit a dentist twice a year to make sure your teeth are strong and healthy.
