Baron Pierre de Coubertin had heard about a group of German archaeologists who, in 1875, had discovered the ruins of ancient Olympia, in Greece, the site of the ancient Olympic games from times 776 BC to AD 394.
In 1894, de Coubertin suggested to a group of international sporting officials that the Olympic Games should be started again. He wanted athletes from all nations of the world to come together every four years for friendly and peaceful competition.
The meeting liked the idea and
so this became the first meeting of the International Olympic
Committee (IOC).
The task for the IOC was to organise the first modern
Olympic Games to be held in Athens, Greece in 1896.

After his death in 1937, Baron Pierre de Coubertin was buried at Lausanne, Switzerland, the headquarters of the IOC.
