Shanghai city emblem

Shanghai is a huge city of high-rise office and apartment buildings, modern department stores and massive freeways. More than 17 million people live there.

Everywhere, older style housing and office buildings are being torn down and replaced. Many new city parks are being constructed.

In factories in and around the city, workers manufacture cars, bicycles, chemicals, clothing and footwear, jade products, sports goods and toys. The city is a centre for banking and finance and is a popular tourist destination.


 

 

The Oriental Pearl Tower is 468 metres high. It is the highest TV tower in Asia and the third highest in the world.

 

 

 

There is a beautiful city museum, many cinemas and theatres where acrobats perform. Soccer is a popular sport and the Shanghai soccer stadium seats 80 000 spectators. There are sporting centres for table tennis and tennis as well as swimming pools.
