Cane toads are a species, or kind, of South American toad. They were introduced into Queensland in 1935 to eat beetles that were destroying the sugar cane. However, the cane toads cannot jump very high, and as the beetles were mostly too high in the sugar cane for the cane toads to reach them, they had very little effect on the pests. Meanwhile, the cane toads proved to be great survivors and in turn became huge pests themselves.
