Robert O'Hara
Burke (1821 - 1861)
Robert O'Hara Burke was born
in County Galway, Ireland
in 1821. He was educated in England and served in the Austrian
Army. In 1848 he joined the the Irish police force. He migrated
to Australia in 1853 settling first in Tasmania.
Because of the gold rush there was a shortage of police in Victoria so Burke travelled fromTasmainia and joined the Victorian police force, working in gold mining areas around Castlemaine and Beechworth.
It is reported that Burke liked people to work and live according to strict rules. He was sometimes moody and would become very angry if his authority was threatened.
Burke died of starvation on the 1st of July, 1861.
