How is a book made?

The steps in the process of making a book
The author makes up a story or writes about a subject.
Books usually start with an author’s idea. When the author makes up a story, invents the characters, the places in the story, and the things that happen there, the story is fiction.
If the author writes about real places, real things, people and animals the writing is called non-fiction.
The author sends the manuscript to the publisher.
The publisher selects which stories or non-fiction writing sent to them by authors will be made into books. The publisher and the author sign a contract. The contract says when the author is to have the book written, and how much money the publisher will pay the author.
The editor checks that there are no mistakes in the manuscript.
A person called an editor, who works for the publisher, reads the author's manuscript to make sure there are no mistakes.
An illustrator draws the pictures to go into the book.
The book designer plans how the pages will look.
The book designer plans the shape and size of the book and how it will look. The book designer makes a dummy of the book with the text and the illustrations to show how it will look.
A typesetter types the text into a computer and prints a rough copy.
The text and the illustrations are pasted together and checked for mistakes.
The final copy is printed on a machine called a printing press.
The bookbinder sews or glues the pages together and puts on the covers.
The publisher sends the books to bookshops where they are sold.
