Bats

Bats are mammals. They have fur and feed their babies milk.

Bats live in most parts of the world.(except in places such as Antarctica where it is too cold)

There are more than 900 kinds or species of bat.

Some kinds of bats eat fruit. They are sometimes called 'flying foxes'.

Some kinds eat insects and small animals such as frogs.

Bats hunt for food at night.

Bats shelter in trees, caves, under bridges and sometimes inside buildings during the day.

Bats find their way by sending out sound waves from their mouths or noses. When the sound waves hit an object an echo comes back. The bat can tell what the object is by the sound of the echo. This is called echolocation.

Baby bats are called pups.

Baby bats have no hair when they are born.

A baby bat clings to its mother and she feeds it milk.
