1894 served in Reid's Free Trade government as Postmaster General, then Secretary for Mines & Agriculture.
1908 Leader of the Free Traders
Was a founder of Fusion, a joining of non-Labor parties. Became Minister for Defence in Deakin's Fusion government. Party Leader of Fusion after Deakin retired, remained Leader until 1917 .
1913 Fusion won election by a majority of 1.
1921-27 High Commissioner London
Died 1947 in Sydney.
