He was a founding member of the Ballarat branch of the Labor Party. 1910 Federal Parliament 1913 Lost seat, became Editor of Ballarat Evening Echo newspaper. 1922 Federal Parliament again 1928 Leader of Australian Labor Party . 1932 Split in NSW Labor Party caused loss of government. 1935 Retired as Leader of the party but active in politics until 1949. Died 1953. |

In 1934, 1937 elections he was returned to office in coalition with Country Party. 1939 Died in Office . |

War 1, won seat in Federal Parliament as a Farmers and Settlers
candidate but later joined the Country Party 1921-39 Leader 1923-29 Deputy Prime Minister & Treasurer in Nationalist-Country Party coalition 1934-39 Caretaker PM for 3 weeks after Lyons' death. He disliked Menzies, and resigned as Leader. 1941-42 Represented Australia in British War Cabinet & also Advisory War Council till 1945. 1949-56 Minister for Health . 1961 Died during election, never knew he'd lost the seat he'd held for 42 years. |
