Deputy Leader under Gorton.
When Liberals lost 1972 elections, he resigned from leadership.
Retained seat until 1982, died 1988.

1972 Won election , 1st Labor government since 1949. He immediately ended conscription, & started program of change. Senate blocked passage of Bills to pay for these changes. Governor-General Sir John Kerr sacked Whitlam government 11/11/1975 & appointed Malcolm Fraser caretaker Prime Minister until election held, which Liberal-Country Party won.
1977 Whitlam resigned leadership and his seat .
