Archery

Archery is a sport where people, standing, use bows to shoot arrows at a target.The target has ten rings. When an arrow hits the centre ring, known as the 'bull's eye', the archer scores ten points.

Arrows are made of aluminium or a material called carbon. Bows are made of wood or fibreglass.

In Olympic competition, men shoot two lots of 144 arrows in the competition. Women shoot one lot of 144 arrows in the competition. Archers have a set time limit in which to shoot their arrows.

Archery was invented ten thousand years ago. Bows and arrows were used for hunting and later for fighting enemies. Archers sometimes rode into battle on horseback. Archery was a sport at the ancient Olympic Games hundreds of years ago where the archers shot at doves.
