Snakes are reptiles that do not have legs.

They slither on the ground to move.

There are more than 2,000 kinds of snake in the world.

Snakes are covered with scaly skin.

Snakes live almost everywhere - on the ground, in water, in trees, underground.

Snakes flick their tongues in and out as a way of sensing what is around them.

Most snakes lay eggs. Some give birth to live babies.

Snakes eat animals and birds.

Some snakes put venom into an animal when they bite it.

Some snakes squeeze an animal to kill it so they can eat it.

Most snakes do not hurt people but sometimes a person might get bitten.

Doctors have medicine to make people better after a snake bite.

Some people keep snakes as pets.
