K is for Koala

A koala is not a bear even though it looks like one!

It is a marsupial. This means a mother koala keeps her baby inside a pouch after it is born.

A pouch is a bit like a pocket in front.

Baby koalas drink milk inside the pouch.

When they are bigger, they ride on their mother's back.

Koalas have thick fur and big noses.

They only live in some parts of Australia.

They have big claws so they can climb trees.

Koalas only eat leaves from some kinds of gum tree.

They sleep most of the day in a tree.

At night they are awake and come down to the ground and move to another tree.
