Morocco: Facts in Brief


The Kingdom of Morocco is in northern Africa. It has borders along the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Its neighbours are Algeria, Western Sahara, and Spain.


Population 29 million people live in the country

Capital city Rabat

Government is a Constitutional monarchy. The King is King Mohammed VI. The parliament, elected by the people at elections, is led by a Prime Minister.

Climate
The climate is Mediterranean which means the summers are warm to hot and winters are cool and wet. In the mountains it is cold in winter and snow falls there.

Geography
The northern coast and the interior are mountainous. In the mountains in the north there are sometimes earthquakes. The coastal plains have rich soils for farming with plenty of water. In the far south the Sahara Desert begins.

Main Industries
Phosphate rock is mined and processed (its used as fertiliser for farm crops), food processing, leather goods, and textiles. Fishing is an important industry.
Thousands of people visit the country every year and many Moroccans have jobs that serve the tourists.

Agriculture
Farmers in Morocco grow barley, wheat, citrus fruits, wine, vegetables, olives and raise goats, sheep and chickens.

Exports: Morocco sells these things to other countries. Clothing, fish, chemicals, transistors, crude minerals, fertilizers, petroleum products, fruits and vegetables.

Currency
The money of Morocco is the Moroccan dirham (MAD)

The official language of Morocco is Arabic. Some Berber languages are spoken. French and English are spoken too.

People
Arab-Berber 99.1%, other 0.9%

Religions
Most people are Muslim (98.7%) Christian 1.1%, Jewish
0.2%
