South Africa: Places to visit

Cape Town
Cape Town is a beautiful city with its striking Tabletop Mountain and great ocean beaches. Out of the city there is rugged wilderness.

Drakensberg
Drakensberg (Dragon Mountain) is a basalt escarpment forming the border with eastern Lesotho. There are San rock paintings here. Much of Drakensberg is national parks, one of which is the Royal Natal National Park. Here the Tugela Falls drop 850 metres. There are some wilderness trails in the area and mountain-climbing is a popular activity.

Durban
Durban is a big subtropical city in the north-eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal. It has been a major port since the 1850s and many Indian South Africans live here.

The weather stays warm all year and Durban's surf beaches are popular.
Durban's art gallery and its natural science museum are worth visiting.

Johannesburg
Johannesburg is a huge city. Jo'burg has suburbs where very wealthy people live and others where the very poor have their shanty homes.

Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park is among the biggest and the oldest in the world. It had its 100th birthday in 1998. You can see lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos as well as cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, and all sorts of antelope species. All in their natural environment.
There are about 2000 kilometres of roads in the park and it is possible to stay there in hotels and camping areas.
