Africa: Animals & Plants

a Kori bustard
South Africa has the largest land animal, the African elephant, and the smallest, the pygmy shrew. It has the tallest animal, the giraffe and the fastest, the cheetah. There are black and white rhinos as well as crocodiles and hippos. South Africa is home to the ostrich and the large flying bird, the Kori bustard. There are also flamingoes.

Wildflowers bloom after spring rains. Large areas in the north
of the country are covered by a savannah-type vegetation, with
acacias and thorn trees. There are some forest areas along the
south coast.
