Botswana: Facts in Brief

In 1996, a part of Africa called Bechuanaland and ruled by the British became an independent country. Its new name was Botswana.

 Botswana is in southern Africa, between the countries of South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. It has no coastline.

 

The Capital City of Botswana is Gaborone.

 

The government of the country is a parliamentary republic, which means it has a government elected by citizens over 18. The parliament elects a President.

The official crest of Botswana. The word 'pula' means rain, and because rain is so scarce in that country, it also means something precious.

Pula is also the money in Botswana.

The official language of Botswana is English, but most people speak Setswana.
