Flat, low-lying
areas near the sea are where salt farms are
located
in Thailand. Farmers build low earth walls similar to those of
rice paddy fields, enclosing solid earth. After the rainy season,
they flood these fields with sea water, using windmills to pump
the water along narrow canals. The sea water is left to dry in
the sun, leaving behind a 20 cm layer of salt. The salt is harvested,
bagged and sold.
