Bear Facts

Bears are mammals. Bears are found in many habitats in different countries. Bears all have a large body with strong legs and a short tail. They have a snout rather like a dog's snout. They have shaggy fur. Their paws have five claws that do not pull back like a cat's claws do. Generally bears live alone, except when a mother is raising cubs.
There are eight different kinds of bear:

Spectacled Bear

 What do they look like? This kind of bear has marks around its eyes that make it look like it is wearing glasses, or spectacles.
 Where do they live? They live in forests high up in the Andes mountains in South America.
 What are their habits? They climb trees very well. They are awake at night and sleep in the daytime. They sleep in nests they make in trees or on the ground. They live alone most of the time.
 What do spectacled bears eat? They hunt for food in the trees. They eat fruit and plants that grow on the trees. They also eat insects and small animals such as mice.
 Life cycle Females have 1, 2 or 3 cubs at a time. Tiny cubs sometimes ride on their mother's back.

American Black Bear

What do they look like? They are medium size bears. Some are black but some are dark brown or white. They have long claws.
Where do they live? American black bears live in forests in many parts of North America. 
What are their habits? Black bears live alone most of the time. They make scratch marks in trees to let other bears know to keep away from that spot.
What do American black bears eat? They eat nuts, berries, fruits, acorns, roots, plants, insects, baby deer and moose. If they live near the sea they catch fish. 
Life cycle Cubs are born in winter. They live in a den that the mother makes to keep them safe and warm.

Asiatic black bear



What do they look like? They are medium size bears. They are black with a patch of creamy white fur on their chest. They have bigger ears than other kinds of bear.
Where do they live? Asiatic black bears live in forests high up on mountains in many parts of Asia, such as China, Japan and India.
What are their habits? They are awake at night and sleep in the daytime in caves or trees. 
 What do Asiatic black bears eat? They eat fruit, honey, small birds and animals, and insects . In autumn they spend a lot of time in trees eating nuts.  
Life cycle Cubs are born in winter. The mother makes a den where she lives with the cubs, keeping them safe and warm.

Sun bear

What do they look like?  They are the smallest bears. They have short black fur . They have a white patch on the chest in a U shape. Their ears are small and round.  
Where do they live?  Sun bears live in forests in Asia.  
What are their habits?   Sun bears spend a lot of time in trees. They have long claws to help them climb. 
What do sun bears eat?  They eat birds, small animals, termites, honey and leaves. 
Life cycle  When sun bears are born they are very small with no fur. At first they cannot see. They grow very fast.
