The Seven Wonders (or miracles) of the Ancient World

These seven wonders were thought to be the most spectacular constructions built in the ancient world. Only one remains today, the rest have been destroyed by fire, earthquakes, or have crumbled and disappeared over time.

What they looked like can only be guessed. These pictures are artists' impressions of what the constructions looked like, based on accounts from the times in which they existed.


The Great Pyramid at Giza, in Egypt was built from about 2700 - 2500 B.C. It is the oldest of the ancient wonders and the only one that remains.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria
, also in Egypt, was built on the island of Pharos in about 270 B.C. When it was completed it was one of the tallest buildings in the world. It was destroyed by earthquakes in the 1300s.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, near modern day Iraq, were built about 600B.C. King Nebuchunezzar II had them built for one of his wives. The gardens were destroyed by earthquake.

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was built in about 550 B.C The marble temple was built for the Greek godess Artemis, in what is now modern Turkey.

The Statue of Zeus was sculpted in the Ancient Greek city of Olympia in about 457 B.C. It was later moved to Istanbul, Turkey where is was destroyed by fire in 462 A.D.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was built in about 353 B.C. in what is now southwestern Turkey. It was a marble tomb built for a Persian king and his wife. Earthquakes destroyed the building in the 1400s.

The Colossus of Rhodes was built on the Greek island in the Aegean Sea in the 200 B.C. The huge bronze statue stood overlooking the water. It was destroyed by an earthquake 56 years after it was built.
