Puffins can swim and fly.
Puffins live near the sea in very cold parts of the world.

There are three species (kinds) of puffins. Puffins live near the sea on rocky coasts in the cold northern parts the world. They can be found in countries such as Greenland, Alaska, Iceland, and in parts of Canada
Puffins have thick, waterproof feathers which protect them from the cold. They have have short wings and short tails. All puffins have large beaks in which they store the fish they catch as they swim underwater. The beaks are brightly coloured when it is time for them to breed. (After breeding they shed the coloured part).
Puffins have orange-red webbed feet.

This puffin has collected fish to feed to its young
Puffins make nests in holes among the rocks or they dig a deep burrow in the soil. The female lays just one egg in the nest. Both parents take turns to sit on the egg until it hatches, and both catch fish and feed it to the chick for about six weeks.
After this time the chick leaves the burrow and starts to swim and dive to find its own food.
Puffins breed after they are about 5 years old.
In winter, and after breeding, puffins migrate (fly) south to warmer places.

This is a map showing the parts of the world where puffins live.
