Fiji
(Official name: Republic of the Fiji Islands)
Fiji is located in the mid-South Pacific Ocean.
The capital city is Suva but most visitors arrive at Nadi International Airport.
There are more than 300 islands in the Fijian archipelago. Each island is surrounded by coral reefs.
The weather is tropical which means that Fiji is warm for most of the year. The best weather is in the dry season from May to October. This time of year has cooler temperatures and there is less rainfall and humidity. Tropical cyclones sometimes happen in the wet season.
Native Fijian people make up most of the population (54%) and there are Indo-Fijians (38%) There are also Chinese and European people on the islands.

The Fijians enjoy rugby.
Industry
On farms the people grow sugar cane, coconuts, cassava (tapioca), rice, sweet potatoes and bananas. They keep cattle, pigs, horses, and goats.
Fishing is an important industry for this island nation.
Tourism is a major industry. Thousands of visitors arrive each year to enjoy the warm weather and to swim and snorkel in the sea. Many people work in hotels and shops that serve the tourists.
Many people work in clothing factories and there are gold and silver mines.
